The Lord Mayor's procession
How do you fit 3 miles of procession into 1.7 miles of city road? You’ll have to come and see!
Over 6000 people are going to take part in the 2010 Lord Mayor's Show, including 2000 servicemen and women, 220 vehicles, 71 floats, 13 marching bands, 21 carriages including the glorious State Coach and of course the giant figures of the City's guardians Gog and Magog. You can see the full processional order here but for all the detail you need to pick up the official programme on the day.
The head of the procession leaves Mansion House at 11.05am and follows the traditional route through the streets of the City to the Royal Courts of Justice where the Lord Mayor takes his oath of allegiance to the Sovereign before the Lord Chief Justice and the Judges of the Queen's Bench Division.
The State Coach and other officials pause at St Pauls for the Lord Mayor to receive a blessing, then while he (or perhaps one day she) takes the oath of loyalty at the Royal Courts, the whole procession reforms near Victoria Embankment ready for the return journey to Mansion House, where the newly sworn-in Lord Mayor will be greeted by the City Aldermen and Livery Company Masters.
You can see the procession going either way, or ideally both: it will take over an hour to pass you and there is so much going on that you're bound to miss some of it the first time!
