Haringey based community group sails into the Lord Mayor’s Show

The Haringey-based Pan Nation Steel Orchestra has received a grant of £15,000 from the City of London Corporation to take part in this year's prestigious Lord Mayor's Show.

On Saturday 12 November, the 684th Lord Mayor of London will follow in the footsteps of his predecessors and embark on a procession from Mansion House to the Royal Courts of Justice via St Paul’s Cathedral, and this year, Pan Nation is creating one of the leading floats.

Pan Nation’s contribution to this year’s Lord Mayor’s Show parade will be a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ themed float. The team is constructing an exciting deserted island which will be decorated with parrots, coconuts, canons and treasure. The steel pan and percussion aficionados will be dressed in fetching eye-patches and pirate uniforms, playing a wide ranging repertoire of hits.

Celene Glasgow, Tenor player for the Pan Nation Steel Orchestra, said: “I can’t wait for the Show to start. I’m excited about being on the BBC. I loved painting the decorations for the float, especially the Treasure Chest.”

Band manager and arranger, Chris Storey, said: “It’s great to be a part of such a big event. I hope that by taking part in the Lord Mayor’s Show we’ll encourage more people to try the steel pan, and get involved in their local community in a positive way. The guys are so excited about the preparations – we can’t wait for Show day now! They are going to get a lot of attention and they deserve every second of it.”

Pan Nation brings together young and older people who have a common interest in learning to play the steel pan. Their mission is to provide an environment that nurtures the talent of the individual, helping to develop each member’s awareness of the team dynamic and its effect on the performer’s confidence and self-esteem. Based in Haringey, Pan Nation showcases the talents of the local community through local, national and international performances, promoting positive communication, leadership and teamwork skills.
