Local Hackney children from Albion Kids Show are preparing for their part in this year’s Lord Mayor’s Show by creating beautiful and thought-provoking paintings of their estates. The paintings will adorn a float specially created to depict urban Hackney through the eyes of its youngest residents.
Albion Kids Show, a community group who recently won funding of £10,500 and an exclusive invitation from the City of London Corporation to take part in the Lord Mayor’s Show, provides opportunities for local children to try their hand at art, sports and even circus performance in the safety of their own estates. The group also hopes to reduce the tension that can exist between children from different Hackney estates by encouraging them to play and learn together from an early age.
The Hackney children have let their imaginations run wild to show their home environment as they see it. From urban estate to flowery suburb to country cottage, the children have each interpreted ‘home’ in a different way. The paintings will be displayed on hats worn by the children, and on the Albion Kids Show’s float in front of thousands of pavement spectators and millions watching worldwide as the Lord Mayor’s Show hits the streets of London on Saturday 11th November.
Alex Burden from Albion Kids Show said: “We asked the children to draw a picture of the environment that surrounded them, their flats, favourite toys and play areas. What was surprising was the variety of different images the children created. They ranged from traditional thatched cottages with winding paths and smoking chimneys to forests and castles.”
Dominic Reid, the Pageantmaster of the Lord Mayor’s Show, said: “The electrifying mix of people and the diversity of the groups that take part in the show is what makes it so spectacular. The show, now in its 793rd year, continues to evolve to embrace all sectors of the community. More than 70 floats, 249 fascinating vehicles, 24 bands of all shapes and sizes, over 6,000 participants, City workers, military bands, and community groups like Albion Kids Show will all come together to produce a vibrant mix of sights, sounds and colours which will dazzle spectators worldwide.”
To be a part of the celebrations and to see the Albion Kids Show float, just get to the City for the morning of Saturday 11th November and nab a place on the well-marked route. The procession will weave its way from Guildhall, in the heart of the City, through the historic streets of the Square Mile, passing Bank Tube, Mansion House and St. Paul’s Cathedral before continuing to the Royal Courts of Justice in the Strand.
