Press release published Friday 06 October 2006
Shoreditch-based Arts for All, one of six community groups funded by the City of London Corporation and invited to take part in this year’s Lord Mayor’s Show, will be taking to the dance floor on the 30th of October with a premier choreographer from the Central School of Ballet for their final dress rehearsal (picture opportunities available). Arts for All have been working with children from schools in the Shoreditch area to prepare their performance for November’s show which will involve circus performers, colourful costumes, music and dancing. The Lord Mayor’s Show will take place on the 11th November when the new Lord Mayor of London will travel from Guildhall to the Royal Courts of Justice for the annual inauguration ceremony.
The children taking part in the show have been working with Ellen Danuta Jackubiel, a choreographer from the Central School of Ballet. She has worked on big West End shows such as Annie and My Fair Lady and Broadway productions of Seussical The Musical and Me and My Girl. Ellen has been choreographing a dance routine for the big day and teaching 30 young people between the ages of six and 15 years a number of techniques including the finer points of gymnastic ribbon.
Caroline Barlow from Arts for All says “This has been a fantastic opportunity for the local Shoreditch kids involved to try their hand at dance, receive training from a professional and perform in front of thousands of attending spectators, and millions watching worldwide when the world’s oldest running street parade hits London on the 11th of November this year.”
One of the key components of the Lord Mayor’s Show is developing social and practical skills of young people in London and beyond by encouraging and supporting their participation. The City of London is a city of learning and projects like these ensure that children from all sectors of the community are given the encouragement and opportunities to develop their skills. The City of London Corporation’s community float scheme gives London’s community projects the funding they need to educate and inspire local children, encouraging them to put their talents to good use and providing the perfect platform to display them.
To support Arts for All on the day, just get to the City for the morning of Saturday 11th November and nab a place on the well-marked route. The procession will weave its way from Guildhall, in the heart of the City, through the historic streets of the Square Mile, passing Bank Tube, Mansion House and St. Paul’s Cathedral before continuing to the Royal Courts of Justice in the Strand.
